I feel I have an affinity to the river, I was brought up near Enfield Lock and spent a lot of time watching the river traffic going through the lock, mainly horse pulled barges. There was a lot of river traffic in the fifties.
My dad was a lighterman from the early thirties until after the war. He brought goods from the Pool of London to Bishops Stortford and Hertford by barge. He would have been through the Burnt Mill Lock more times than most of our skippers today. I spent most of my working life travelling the UK selling electronic test equipment (more time away than at home so my wife tells me). I loved every minute of it.
My interests are any kind of motor sport, watching golf, and I also belong to the Harlow U3A. I have lived in Harlow for about 50 years with my wife Jan, have four children, thirteen grandchildren, and one great grandchild. I am enjoying working with a great crew of various skilled volunteers here at CanalAbility.
